Langar dal | Amritsari dal | Punjabi langar wali dal

Langar dal is delicious, elegant and fragrant dal made using simple ingredients.

“Langar” is the free community meal service provided in Sikh Gurudwaras to all visitors where people sit together and relish Guru ka Prasad.

The intense flavour of urad dal with its skin, chana dal and an assortment of spices, green chillies and onions transforms it into a delicious dal that will make you lick your fingers! 


  • Soak 1/2 cup split black lentils(back urad dal) and 1/2 cup chana dal for 1 hour.
  • In a Pressure, add soaked split black lentil chana dal, 3 cups water,1/2 tbsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tbsp ginger garlic paste. Pressure cook upto 4 whistles.
  • Mash the cooked dal with ladle, add 1 cuo of water, boil and simmer.
  • While the dal is simmering, heat 2 tbsp oil in a heavy bottomed vessel,
  • In a pan, add 1 bay leaf, 1 cinnamon stick... once it sizzles, add 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste, 1 large chopped onions salute. Add 1 large finely chopped tomatoes and saute.
  • Add the onion tomato gravy mix to the simmering dal and mix well. Add salt, 1 tbsp butter and simmer.
  • In a sauce pan, add 1 tbsp ghee, 1/4 tbsp asafoetida, 1/2 tbsp red chilli powder, 1 tbsp coriander powder, 1/2 tbsp kasturi methi. Mix well and add this to dal mix.
  • Delicious healthy Langar dal is ready
